Winter fishing opportunities

Although many of the upper reaches of the big rivers are now closed, the lower reaches remain open throughout the year.

These include the lower reaches of the Rakaia, Selwyn, Waimakariri, Ashley, Hurunui and Waiau rivers.

‘Plenty ducks’ from trend counts

Based on our aerial trend counts it looks like there will be plenty of ducks around this season. Since 2007 our trend counts show there has been a 12% increase in the dabbling duck population in Canterbury.

The fresh of last weekend has bought salmon into all the big rivers and resulted in good fishing all week. Word on the street is that the Waimak has been fishing so well that many of the Rakaia anglers have headed up north for a go.
